The Crucifixion

A[1] Before Pilate

• Mark 15:1 (LSB) 1And early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Sanhedrin, immediately held council; and binding Jesus, led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.

B Sent to Herod

• Luke 23:6–10 (LSB) 6Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem in those days. 8Now when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him. 9And he questioned Him at some length, but He answered him nothing. 10And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, vehemently accusing Him.

C Returned to Pilate

• Luke 23:11 (LSB) 11And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a bright robe and sent Him back to Pilate.

D Sentenced

• Luke 23:23–24 (LSB) 23But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices were prevailing. 24And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted.

E Led to Calvary

• Luke 23:26 (LSB) 26And when they led Him away, they took hold of a man, Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

“Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?” 19And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a mighty prophet in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. 21“But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22“But also some women among us astounded us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23and not finding His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. 24“Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also said, but Him they did not see.” 25And He said to them, “O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26“Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” 27Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. 28And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were going farther. 29But they urged Him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30And it happened that when He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and after breaking it, He was giving it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. And He vanished from their sight. 32And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was opening the Scriptures to us?” 33And they stood up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those with them, 34who were saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35And they were relating their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

• Luke 24:36–43 (LSB) 36Now while they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace to you.” 37But being startled and frightened, they were thinking that they were seeing a spirit. 38And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39“See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41And while they still were not believing because of their joy and were still marveling, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish, 43and He took it and ate it before them.

Thomas Disbelieves

• John 20:19–25 (LSB) 19So while it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and while the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23“If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.” 24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

Jesus Appears to Thomas

• John 20:26–31 (LSB) 26And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27Then He said to Thomas, “Bring your finger here, and see My hands; and bring your hand here and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.” 30Therefore many other signs Jesus also did in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these have been written so that you
• may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
