The Hebrew word תַּלְמִיד (talmid) translates to “disciple” or "student."

However, the role of a talmid in Biblical times went far beyond that of a mere student. A talmid was someone who dedicated their entire life to following their rabbi (teacher), not just to learn what the rabbi knew, but to become like the rabbi and do what the rabbi did.

In the context of releasing Jesus, being a talmid means more than just acquiring knowledge about His teachings. It involves a deep, personal commitment to live out those teachings in every aspect of our lives by releasing the Holy Spirit from within. Jesus called His disciples to “deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him” (Matthew 16:24). This call to discipleship is a call to transformation, to become a living vessel of Jesus through His character and indwelling actions.

A talmid of Jesus is someone who:

  1. Seeks to know Yeshua intimately: This involves spending time in prayer, studying the Scriptures, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him.
  2. Release Yeshua’s actions: Just as a talmid would strive to do what their rabbi did, we are called to release Jesus’ example of love, compassion, and service to others.
  3. Lives out Yeshua’s teachings: This means applying His teachings to our daily lives, making decisions that reflect His LIFE, and sharing His message with others.
As we become an example of true talmidim (plural of talmid) of Yeshua/Jesus, let’s remember that this journey is not about perfection, but about progress. It’s about continually growing in our relationship with Him and allowing His Spirit to transform us from the inside out.

May we all embrace the call to be talmidim of Yeshua/Jesus, dedicating our lives to knowing Him, expressing Him, and living out His teachings in everything we say and do.
