Acts 9:3–6 (NASB95)

As he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" And He said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do."

COWBOY WISDOM

Anybody can hang a shingle and call himself a horse trainer. But a colt that's actually broke right — gentled, sacked out, started under saddle by somebody who knows what he's doing — carries that training in the way he moves. You can tell within five minutes whether a horse was started by a green kid with a YouTube video or by a hand who apprenticed for years under somebody who'd forgotten more about horses than most folks ever learn. The proof isn't in what the trainer claims. It's in the horse.

Paul's opponents in Galatia wanted the churches to doubt his papers — to wonder whether he was really sent by anybody who mattered. So Paul points them straight to the moment his training began: not a classroom, not a committee's approval, but Jesus Christ Himself, knocking him flat on the Damascus road. "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" There's no mistaking that voice for a man's voice. Paul didn't appoint himself an apostle any more than a colt breaks itself. Somebody with authority took hold of him.

There's an old truth tucked into Jeremiah long before Paul ever hit that road: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5). God's calling on a life is rarely something a person works up on their own. It's laid on them, sometimes before they even know what to call it — the way a good colt's disposition was set long before anybody ever threw a saddle on his back.

Here's the comfort in all this for the rest of us who'll never have a Damascus road story: God still does the calling, and He still does the training. What He asks of us isn't to manufacture our own credentials but to show up broke to His hand — willing, teachable, listening for "it will be told you what you must do." The world will always want to know whose papers you're carrying. Make sure it's the Owner's brand, not your own.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

• Think of a time God called you to something specific. How did you know it was Him and not simply your own idea, or someone else's expectation of you?
• Paul's calling came straight from Jesus; Ananias' role afterward was to confirm what God had already started, not to originate it. Who has God placed in your life to confirm what He's already begun in you?
• Have you ever tried to do the Lord's work running on your own credentials — your title, your reputation, your effort — rather than resting in His calling? What happened?
• What's one area of your life where you need to trust that God's calling on you doesn't require anyone else's permission to be real?

PRAYER FOCUS

Father, thank You that You call whom You choose, and Your calling doesn't depend on my resume or anyone else's approval. Like You stopped Saul on the road to Damascus, stop me wherever I'm running the wrong direction, and make Your purpose for my life plain. Give me confidence to walk in what You've called me to, and humility to let others confirm it rather than chasing recognition. In Jesus' name, Amen.
