Acts 24:24-25 (NASB95)

But some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, “Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you.”

COWBOY WISDOM

Felix heard the gospel straight from the apostle Paul, up close, more than once. Scripture says he became frightened — the truth landed right where it needed to. And then he did the most ordinary, most dangerous thing a person can do with conviction: he put it off. “Go away for the present. When I find time, I'll summon you.” That time never came the way Felix meant it to. Two years passed. He kept calling Paul back, not to hear more of the gospel, but hoping for a bribe. He was convicted, but he was never converted.

Any rancher who's put off mending a fence knows how this story ends. You see the post leaning, the wire gone slack, and you tell yourself you'll get to it directly. The stock doesn't wait for your schedule, though, and neither does the storm that finally knocks the whole line down. Felix saw the truth plainly — righteousness, self-control, judgment to come — and instead of dealing with it, he scheduled it for a day that never arrived.

It's a sobering thing to be so close to the truth and still walk away unchanged. Felix isn't remembered as a man who never heard the gospel. He's remembered as a man who heard it, felt it, and filed it away for later. That's a harder condition than never hearing it at all, because it takes a working conscience and lets it go numb through neglect, the same warning Paul lived out on Day One in reverse.

The sermon that gave us this whole week ended with a question, and it's still the right one to ask: do you have a clear conscience before God and man? Not someday. Not when you find time. Today, while the truth is still landing.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

1. Felix was convicted by Paul's words but chose to delay rather than decide. What's something spiritual you've been putting off “until a more convenient time”?
2. Felix kept hoping for a bribe instead of surrendering to the truth. Is there something you're hoping will pay off instead of simply trusting God?
3. Two years passed, and Felix never called Paul back to hear the gospel again. What does that warn us about the danger of delay?
4. If today were the day you finally settled things with God — fully, without holding back — what would need to change?

PRAYER FOCUS

Lord, don't let me be a Felix — convicted but never converted, moved but never changed. When Your truth lands on my heart, give me the courage to respond today instead of scheduling it for a more convenient time that may never come. Search me, root out anything I've been putting off, and let this be the day I settle it fully with You. In Jesus' name, amen.
